NEAR DARK

Kathryn Bigelow’s directorial debut (she went on to make such smart action flicks as POINT BREAK and STRANGE DAYS) is this low-key, oddly subtle vampire film made in 1987. Adrian Pasdar (“Profit,” “Heroes”) stars as Caleb, a farmboy who falls for the oddly alluring (and alarmingly pale) Mae, who seduces him into her “family” – a cadre of bloodsucking night crawlers. A creepily evocative synth-pop score by Tangerine Dream, effective performances from a good B-list cast, and strong if low-key direction from Bigelow make this a pleasant surprise, and a cult classic.
