Chicago 10 Movie Review

R, 110 min, 2007

Director: Brett Morgen
Writer: Brett Morgen
Stars: Jeffrey Wright, Nick Nolte, Roy Scheider

A perfect companion piece to Robert Greenwald’s Steal This Movie (2000), Brett Morgan’s Chicago 10 is a fascinating documentary about the controversial period surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Utilizing actual archival footage, court transcripts and made complete with animated recreations of the court proceedings starring the voices of such stars as Hank Azaria, Mark Ruffalo and Jeffrey Wright portraying the likes of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and Bobby Seale, respectively, Morgen’s film takes you to a time and place that must not be forgotten. The absorbing proceedings are scored to music befitting the tone (Eminem, “Sabotage” by Beastie Boys, etc.).

In the end, with its cavalier filmmaking spirit, this film becomes a terrifically entertaining history lesson.
